Our Curriculum

Writing

IMPACT

At Sussex Road, we want our children to write with confidence, adapting their language and style to suit a given context.  Not only do the children learn to write for a range of audiences and purposes, they are encouraged to explore their own identity as a writer and to use writing as a means of self-expression.

Children are challenged by both the adults and each other to continually broaden their vocabulary so that they can effectively communicate both orally and in writing.  As they progress through the school, they develop their understanding of grammar and knowledge of the linguistic conventions that also support this.

Through engaging and purposeful writing opportunities, we seek to empower our students to become proficient writers who can effectively communicate their thoughts, emotions, and experiences both within and beyond the classroom.

IMPLEMENTATION

Our writing curriculum starts with a quality core text for children to engage with.  We have sourced high-quality texts that motivate the children and inspire them to write.  From these, they explore the author’s choice of language and grammatical features and are challenged to explain why some choices are more effective than others.  Where appropriate, these texts are supplemented by examples of the style of writing the children will be engaging in.

Grammar is taught both as integral to the writing process, where children are encouraged to make choices according to the audience and purpose, and as a discrete subject to develop children’s understanding of the conventions of written English.  As far as possible, links are made to the genres children are currently exploring in order to emphasise the connections between the grammar used and the effects it will have on the reader.

Phonics and spelling are taught as discrete subjects through sessions that allow children to explore sounds, spelling patterns & anomalies and etymology.  Children are then challenged to use this knowledge in their writing.  Time is also given to developing and practising handwriting as being able to write quickly and legibly allows children to express their ideas clearly and prevents frustration when trying to get thoughts down on paper, improving confidence in writing tasks.

IMPACT

The percentage of our children achieving the expected standard in writing at the end of Key Stage 2 is consistently above national average but, more importantly, children leave us as confident writers who can express themselves authentically and communicate effectively.  Through the writing process, our children have learnt to construct logical arguments, evaluate evidence and communicate their ideas persuasively.  These critical thinking skills are essential for academic success and lifelong learning, empowering students to navigate complex challenges and make informed decisions in the future.  By having opportunities to work collaboratively with others, discussing ideas, revising drafts and providing constructive feedback, our children develop essential collaboration skills and learn to appreciate diverse perspectives.

Perhaps most importantly, the impact of our writing curriculum extends beyond academic achievement to instil a lifelong love for writing in our children.  By providing meaningful writing experiences, celebrating pupil voice and nurturing creativity, we have sparked a passion for writing that lasts beyond the classroom.  Our children view writing as a powerful tool for self-expression, reflection and communication – a skill they can carry with them throughout their lives.
