Physical Education
INTENT
We aim to deliver a high quality, inclusive Physical Education curriculum to motivate, engage and enable all children to be successful. We aim to instil habits of positive lifestyle choices with children understanding the importance of active choices and the impact this can have on their physical and mental wellbeing. We focus on all of our children having enjoyable, memorable experiences that encourage them to form and develop a positive personal relationship with physical activity for life.
We place high importance on children securing and building on fundamental movement skills with children becoming increasingly competent and confident to access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. Building on this we expose our children to range of disciplins which they revisit over their time in school. Children will be equipped with the skills to participate in a range of sporting events, competing against self and against others, understanding the importance of collaboration and sportsmanship.
We aim for all of our children to understand that they have the right to be active in a safe, positive and trusted environment with an equal chance to achieve their potential.
IMPLEMENTATION
We have used the National Curriculum and current research to develop a bespoke curriculum, based on our school context and the needs of our children. Children will learn the importance of physical literacy, focusing their relationship with movement and physical activity throughout life. Children in Year R, 1 and 2 will learn and master fundamental movement skills focusing on locomotor, manipulative and stability. Teachers follow a practice, teach and apply model to each individual skill give children ample opportunity to embed the skill. Children apply our school ethos of question, challenge, explore through our OAA lessons using the school grounds and the local area. Precision and Games are taught through out the school focusing on a range of games that allow the children to apply the FMS they have previously learnt. We have broken each area into the 3 pillars of P.E: Motor competence, Healthy Participation and Rules, Tactics and Strategies to ensure specificity when teaching the skills. Children are introduced to swimming in KS2, with lessons offered in Y3,4 and 5, top up swimming is offered to children in Y6. We want all children to feel success during our P.E lessons, we have a range of resources to support this: the children can choose which resources they want to use during the lessons to enable them to be successful.
Our PE curriculum is enriched through a wide range of after school clubs and school experiences. The Y4 activity day at Bewl Water allows all children to have the opportunity to learn skills of canoeing, orienteering and low ropes. The children build on this in Y5 in the residential where they learn the skills of climbing, paddle boarding, archery and axe throwing. We are in the Sports partnership that enables us to take part in a range of local events and competitions such as colour run, basketball, football and athletic tournaments. We hold inter house tournaments throughout the year giving the children the opportunity to compete against each other in the BOTH games.
IMPACT
Our curriculum will motivate, engage and enable all children to be successful in Physical activity. Children will have the knowledge to make informed, active choices knowing the impact this will have on their physical and mental wellbeing and how it will make them feel. Children will have secured fundamental movement skills and will have experienced a range of precision and games, identifying which they would like to pursue in the future.
