Science
We aim to deliver a Science curriculum at Sussex Road which enables our children to question, challenge and explore the world around them in order to make sense of it. We enable children to become curious scientists asking questions about the world around them, and using their knowledge and skills to seek answers and draw conclusions. Children will be instilled with a sense of excitement and curiosity about understanding the world through different types of scientific enquiries. They will learn that science is evident and relevant in all aspects of our daily lives. Children will be introduced to and encouraged to discuss big questions and will look to solve these throughout the learning.
Our Science curriculum offers children the opportunity to develop a secure understanding of scientific methods, scientific vocabulary and scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the study of biology, chemistry and physics. Children will develop an understanding of how scientific ideas have developed through the work of scientists, both past and present. They will be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
Sussex Road School follows the Kent Primary Science Scheme of Work which links directly with the National Curriculum. Substantive and disciplinary knowledge are taught side by side in each lesson enabling children to think like scientists. Lessons are progressive and sequenced throughout the school, they build and revisit prior learning. As well as this there is a focus on scientific vocabulary, common misconceptions, significant people in the field (past and present), and a variety of scientific enquiries. Stimulating practical investigations underpin the curriculum allowing children the opportunity for independent learning promoting their natural curiosities and nurturing a love for scientific enquiry and knowledge.
Working scientifically skills are embedded within each lesson focusing on the key features of scientific enquiry. Children learn not only the scientific content but also that scientists use a variety of approaches to answer questions.
Our science curriculum encourages children to question, challenge and explore the world around them. It ensures our pupils have an accurate and precise grasp of scientific concepts, and can express them using correct scientific vocabulary.
It equips children with the skills to link the relevance of what they are learning to their everyday lives. It enables children with the necessary disciplinary skills to question what they see around them and carry out an enquiry to confirm or refute their hypothesis.
Our children consistently achieve higher than the national average in science and have the foundations to study and enjoy science at KS3.
